Summary

Peripheral nerve transfers in patients with cervical SCI will improve distal motor function, functional independence and patient quality of life. Nerve transfers have improved patient outcomes following brachial plexus injuries and more recently case reports have demonstrated exciting outcomes when utilized in patients with cervical SCI. The long-term objective of this proposal is to establish and validate clinical guidelines on the use of nerve transfers to restore distal motor function following a cervical SCI. The rationale for this research is establishing pilot data for treating SCI patients with nerve transfers, will provide guidance for both clinical management and will prove useful in generating treatment algorithms incorporating nerve and tendon transfer strategies. We also expect these findings will serve as a useful tool in counseling families and in patient selection for future SCI clinical trials.
