Summary

Do you often struggle to fall asleep at night? The University of Pennsylvania, in partnership with Advanced Medical Electronics, have developed a low-risk, non-pharmacologic intervention that can be implemented on mobile devices for the treatment of insomnia.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of this smartphone-delivered behavioral treatment for insomnia in older adults. This is a remote telehealth study, which means that all study procedures are conducted online and/or by phone.

Description

There will be a two-week pre-intervention screening period, where you will be asked to answer questions about your current sleep patterns and provide details on your health. You will also be asked to download and use a smartphone application, called TapToSleep, to fill out a "sleep diary" twice a day. A sleep diary is like a short survey that asks about your daily sleep habits, such as what time you get into bed and what time you wake up in the morning.

If you remain eligible after the 2-week pre-intervention period, you will be randomly assigned to one of two groups, both of which include behavioral interventions that may improve insomnia symptoms. You will be asked to use the TapToSleep app and communicate with the study staff regularly during the intervention period. There will be a follow-up interview two months after the intervention ends. In Total, your participation in the study will last three and a half months.

FAQ

If you are interested in participating in this research study, you may contact the study staff or begin the process yourself by taking this Short Survey

You may have the opportunity to earn up to $75 for your participation in this study. Payment will be issued as you progress through the study and will be based on the estimated amount of time spent actively participating in the study, which includes completing questionnaires (administered electronically and by phone), and using the TapToSleep app regularly. Further details about compensation are listed below:

$25 for active participation during the pre-intervention period
$20 for active participation during the first half (two weeks) of the intervention period
$20 for active participation during the second half (two weeks) of the intervention period
$10 for completing the final surveys and exit interview (by phone)

You will receive payment via ClinCard (similar to a debit card). A blank ClinCard will be mailed to you and money can be uploaded to the card virtually. If you do not complete the minimum requirements of a particular pay-period (pre-intervention, 1st half of intervention, 2nd half of intervention, end of study), you will not receive payment for that time period.
