Summary

Are you having any trouble with your memory or sleep?

This research study will explore whether treating sleep apnea can improve memory. Compensation is up to $300 for the participant's time and up to $100 for the study partner.

Description

We are looking to recruit participants with sleep apnea as well as those who DO NOT have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a medical condition that many people do not know they have because it occurs during sleep. Sleep apnea is associated with snoring, pauses in breathing, and decreased brain oxygen levels; it may affect memory in older adults. The participants in the study with sleep apnea will receive CPAP treatment for sleep apnea. The participants who do not have sleep apnea do not need a CPAP machine and thus will not use a CPAP machine. Eligible subjects can have the sleep study and CPAP equipment (if needed) provided at no cost as part of the research study or they can use a recent one performed by their doctor. Each participant will also need a study partner for the study.

Eligible participants will also receive a cognitive assessment, as well as a brain MRI and amyloid PET scan at no cost; they can decline the MRI or PET if they wish. The participant and their designated study partner will be in the study for approximately 12 months.
