Summary
The purpose of this study is to evaluate brain responses to food in smokers during a short smoking abstinence period compared to smoking as usual.
Description
Smoking participants will be asked to complete an Intake Visit to determine eligibility, a Baseline Visit to collect measures and two 4-day study periods: one while smoking as usual and the other while not smoking (even a single puff) for the entire period. During these periods you will be asked to complete phone calls to discuss your eating and drinking activity with a trained staff member. You would be asked to come to our Center on 4 consecutive days of each period for a monitoring visit; on the 4th visit of each period you would complete an MRI scan session. The MRI scans will last approximately 1 hour and take place in a standard, closed MRI scanner where your brain activity will be measured using a technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The entire study will take approximately 6-8 weeks for you to complete. Participants will be compensated for their time and for travel.
